Nintendo 3DS homebrew is set to take off very soon. With the release of several flash cards that now enable the Nintendo 3DS to start running and playing homebrew games and applications developed for the Nintendo DS system, it will only be a matter of time before we're going to see a whole slew of homebrew games and applications for the 3DS console.

I know I have written about homebrew ds games and homebrew gaming in general in the past, and in a lot of detail. I wanted to give a little bit of a refresher course on just what homebrew games and applications mean for you, as a Nintendo 3DS owner.

Homebrew games and applications are games that are developed / created and released absolutely free by the developers themselves. Often times these games are made so that developers can test their skills, or hone their coding powers, and to push the game system to do things that they simply can't do at their day jobs.... which probably include working for some major game developer.
3DS homebrew games and DS Homebrew are the same in that sense. Games are made, or applications created, and then they are given away as free downloads on line. And all you will need to be able to play these homebrew games is a flash card like the R4 DS, and presumably the r4i or R4 3DS card, which will be out for the Nintendo 3DS console very shortly, enabling homebrew gaming to come to Nintendo's newest hand held system.
While we wait in great anticipation for the new 3DS r4 cards, you are able to use the r4i gold and various other
3DS flash cards to enable homebrew on this new 3d game system. You can play any one of the thousands of already available homebrew games and applications that have been released for the Nintendo DS and DSi system. With the help of the r4 3DS, you can instantly have up to a thousand free homebrew games and apps - a huge game library for a game system that you just got your hands on.
As with any new technology, it will take time for homebrew and indie developers to be able to fully take advantage of the new 3DS hardware and the technology that runs it all. In time though, we'll be seeing some amazing Nintendo 3DS homebrew games and application, in full 3D.
